The G2 Yamaha Grand Piano is referred to by some as the piano that Yamaha built their reputation on. With a richer tone than the newer versions, this used Yamaha grand is fun to play and a great choice for somebody who wants more tone than a baby grand piano.
With longer strings than a new Yamaha C1 grand piano and an all wood action, this used Yamaha grand is a great value!
The Simple Yamaha Piano Buyer’s Guide
We were a Yamaha piano dealer before we moved to Naples and Bonita Springs, so we understand how confusing this can be.
For most of Yamaha’s piano building history, they built one series of grand piano – called the G series.Today, they build five, of which four are branded as Yamaha. Changing the model numbers from C to G – most of which happened from 1967 until 1994 – made it easier for Yamaha to raise their new piano prices and harder for customers to compare used piano prices.
In our opinion, today’s C series pianos are very similar to the original G series and almost of the quality of Steinway’s Essex pianos. You can tell the original G series from the today’s lower end G series because the newer models have a letter after the G.
Today’s G series are the same size as the C series pianos, but are made with lower grade materials. The G series costs less, but the pianos sound very different and are built in different factories.
The CX series are improved versions of the C series, using thicker frames, better soundboards, and higher grade piano string wire, similar to the differences between an Essex and Steinway designed Boston pianos, which feature an all maple inner-rim, the same piano string wire as a Steinway, and a patented Octagrip pinblock for better tuning stability that other pianos.
The CF and S series pianos are described as being their “handcrafted” pianos and are typically priced the same or higher than new Steinway piano prices.
